First half goals from Duckens Nazon and Marc McNulty gave Coventry City a comfortable passage to the third round of the FA Cup – the first time the club have managed to get that far in four seasons.

Although City started the game poorly, City’s leading scorers settled the nerves before the break to ensure there was no upset at the Ricoh Arena as the Sky Blues saw off non-league Boreham Wood in the second round clash in front of 2,985 fans.

Mark Robins’s men got themselves in front against the National League outfit – who had knocked out League One Blackpool in the previous round – just before the half hour mark when Nazon slotted home the loose ball after the keeper had saved a McNulty effort.

And McNulty added a second in the 40th minute after Nazon sent him clean through, beating Grant Smith with a clinical finish to take a two-goal cushion into half-time.

City then finished the job early by adding a third little more than a minute into the second half when Jordan Shipley hit a tap-in at the far post from a McNulty ball across the face of goal.

The visitors attempted to have a go in the second half but Coventry were content to soak up the pressure and play on the counter attack in a thoroughly professional display.

Robins made two changes to his side that included Ben Stevenson who slotted in alongside Michael Doyle in the holding midfield role in the continued absence of the injured Liam Kelly, while Rod McDonald was also forced to sit out with injury which meant Tom Davies deputised as the manager deployed a 4-3-3 formation against the non-leaguers who played with wing-backs.

And although the visitors made life hard for Coventry in the first 25 minutes they were limited to just two shots on target as the home side defended their lines comfortably to ensure they are in the hat for the third round of the famous competition.
