The result saw City fail to score for the third consecutive League Two match

Coventry City managed a single point against bottom of the league Chesterfield in a tale of two keepers at the Proact Stadium.

The Sky Blues had suffered back-to-back League Two defeats going into the fixture, taking the shine off their bright opening to the campaign when double victories saw them sitting pretty at the top of the division, fuelling fans’ hopes of taking the fourth tier by storm.

But they should really have collected all three against the Spireites who were reduced to ten men on the hour in a game in which City created more than enough chances to win the game – a number wasted as they failed to hit the target and two outstanding saves denying Marc McNulty in each half.

Coventry’s own keeper, meanwhile, Lee Burge pulled off two equally impressive stops to keep them in the game in the opening half against Gary Caldwell’s men. Burge was the most significant change for City, making his first league appearance this term after starting the campaign behind summer signing Liam O’Brien.

But the 24-year-old, who was handed a game in the Checkatrade Trophy in midweek, was back in the No.1 shirt following costly mistakes by O’Brien in consecutive games against Newport County and Yeovil, and did enough in the opening 45 minutes to suggest he’s back for the foreseeable future.

Elsewhere there was a club debut for deadline day signing Tom Davies, the 25-year-old centre-back filling in for the injured Rod McDonald in the heart of the back four where he made a nervous start to his City career, hitting a couple of poor early passes to put his side under pressure in a tight opening to the game.

But it was home keeper Tommy Lee who kept his side in the game with a superb save to deny McNulty in the 15th minute, ahead of two back post headers from Peter Vincenti that he directed over the bar – the player putting his head in his hands in frustration knowing he should have done better as Coventry began to look the brighter of the two sides.

However, the visitors had their own keeper to thank come the half hour mark when Burge threw himself at full stretch to his right to get a hand to a curling Jordan Flores free-kick that looked destined for the top corner. It really was a brilliant save and got Jack Grimmer off the hook after the defender had committed a professional foul on Matthew Briggs who threatened to run straight through the middle, leaving the full-back with a yellow card and City to defend a dangerous set-piece.

The home side finished the half the stronger of the two teams, sending in a number of crosses to the box where Davies and Grimmer both helped clear the lines before Burge came to the rescue for a second time with another outstanding stop, this time to deny striker Kristian Dennis who beat the off-side trap to go one-on-one with the keeper who made himself big and got a hand to the No.9’s effort.

Jodi Jones, who hit two disappointing free-kicks within range but failed to hit the target, was causing problems for the Spireites but City desperately needed a bit more creativity to find a way through a slow but organised back four and take the sting out of the home side’s momentum.

And City went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock seven minutes into the second half when McNulty hit a ferocious effort on the run that was palmed into the crossbar by Lee who, like his opposite number Burge, was in inspired form and the pair the difference between the two sides.

The Sky Blues were then handed a boost when holding midfielder Robbie Weir was shown a second yellow card in the space of 11 minutes for fouls on Jones, reducing the home side to ten men on the hour.

The creative boots of Tony Andreu were sent on a few minutes later, the former Norwich No.10 replacing Stuart Beavon, and he almost unlocked the door when he sent a brilliant through ball down the middle for McNulty whose first touch and pace took him past the static last man to go one on one with the keeper. However, the striker bent his shot wide of the far post in what looked to be a costly miss.

Andreu was the architect of another chance minutes later after some excellent approach play from Jones, but the forward’s centre was met by the unmarked McNulty who was almost on his knees when he got his head to the cross and sent it wide of the target from six yards out. Duckens Nazon replaced Vincenti, who had a goal disallowed for off-side seconds before the 76th minute change, as City continued to make their extra man advantage count by pushing for a goal.

But despite continuing to heap pressure on in six minutes of added time they simply couldn’t find a way through to get the all-important goal and three points that were seemingly there for the taking.

Attendance: 5,164 (City 1,443)

It's the second game in a row we've failed to beat a team with only ten men! :clown:
