A single goal from Newport's Reece Cole condemned City to a 0-1 loss at the Ricoh ArenaCoventry City suffered their first defeat of the season in League Two as Newport County claimed a hard earned 0-1 win at the Ricoh Arena.
A single goal from Reece Cole was the difference between the two sides on an afternoon where both teams failed to create too many chances in front of goal.
Sky Blues boss Mark Robins opted to stick with the same eleven that claimed victory away at Grimsby Town last week, but the game was slow to spark into life.
The first half came and went with little to separate the sides in a cagey affair, although Liam O'Brien had to be sharp to cut out a low driven cross, before Newport escaped just before the interval when the Sky Blues failed to turn the ball over the line in a frantic goal-line scramble.
The visitors took the lead in the 53rd minute when Reece Cole was given far too much room in the City half, before striking a long range effort at goal from 25 yards.
While the shot was struck with decent power, O'Brien should have completed a comfortable save, but the ball appeared to bounce just before it reached him and the keeper could only manage a weak fingertip which saw the ball trickle over the line.
The opening goal did, however, cause a response from City and the introduction of Tony Andreu off the bench looked as if it would pay dividends for Robins.
The former Norwich City midfielder made an instant impact and carved out a great opportunity to equalise, collecting a Jack Grimmer cross in the box before spinning the defender and trying to bend the ball into the corner.
But County keeper Day made a terrific fingertip save to deny the new signing his first goal in a Sky Blue shirt.
Jodi Jones then almost found the equaliser in the final five minutes after his shot took a deflection in the box, and looked as if it may loop over Day, but the keeper pulled off a smart save.
In the end City will be disappointed to have lost for the first time this season, and Robins may be forced to include Andreu from the start against Yeovil Town next week.
