Coventry City boss Tony Mowbray says he is close to quitting as manager of the Sky Blues after 18 months in charge.

Despite rescuing a draw with fellow strugglers AFC Wimbledon, bottom-side City are three points adrift, having failed to win in 10 League One games.

"I won't be a burden to this club. I'm think I'm an honourable guy, and I won't be around too long if we're not winning," Mowbray said.

"I won't expect to be paid. I know this club needs every penny."

The former Celtic boss, who took City to the top of League One just 10 months ago, has been in charge since March 2015 and kept the club in the third tier on the final day of last season.

After another frustrated summer in the transfer market, against the backdrop of continued protests from fans against the club's owners, Otium, City have so far struggled, scoring just five goals and registering six draws in 10 games to sit bottom of League One.

"Let's see what the next few hours days bring," Mowbray said.

"The table doesn't lie. It's embarrassing to go 10 games without a win," he added to BBC Coventry and Warwickshire after the draw.

Mowbray said that he will consult his long-time number two, City technical director Mark Venus, before deciding their next move.

"I'm not a quitter by nature," he said. "But we'll sit down and see what's right.

"I've talked to the players. They've worked extremely hard again, but it's a man's game and we've got bullied a bit again.

"They're babies in a man's league. I probably let them down by not getting the right defender in who could have been a man and help us keep clean sheets. But we know what the budget is and we didn't get our targets."

Tony Mowbray resigns as Coventry City manager with Sky Blues bottom of League One table

Tony Mowbray has confirmed his resignation as Coventry City manager, ending his 20 month spell at the Ricoh Arena.

Speaking exclusively to the Coventry Telegraph, the Sky Blues boss revealed that he is stepping down with immediate effect.

Confirming his resignation, Mowbray said: “I spoke to Mark Venus after the game and spoke to Joy Seppala this morning.

“I’m back home in Middlesbrough, took the kids to school this morning.

“I came to get this club out of this league and it looks like that’s not possible.

"We haven’t, ultimately, got the ingredients to do what I came to do so I think someone else needs to have a go at it.

“That’s it really.”

“Ten games, bottom line, the pride in me says that’s unacceptable. Let someone else have a go at it.

“Let’s hope the lads can go to Port Vale and get a result at the weekend. It wouldn’t surprise me.

"By waiting, carrying on and losing your job in a different way then that leaves a financial burden on the club, so I feel it’s right to walk away and not do that because the club needs every penny."

In a club statement on the official website, Coventry City write: "Coventry City can today confirm that Tony Mowbray has resigned as manager of the football club.

"Without a win in the first ten league games, Tony felt on professional level that he was no longer able to take the club forward.

"Coventry City FC would like to thank Tony for all his energy and dedication over the past 18 months. We would also like to wish Tony all the very best for the future and put on record that he will always be welcome at the football club.

"Technical Director, Mark Venus will take responsibility of first team duties with immediate effect."
