Coventry 0 - 2 Newcastle

Newcastle extended their lead at the top of the Championship to seven points after seeing off Coventry to secure their seventh consecutive league win.

The Sky Blues were far from out-played and Leon Best's piledriver hit the bar after a Michael McIndoe backheel.

But Newcastle hit back and Shola Ameobi scored the opener in first-half injury time with a ripping shot from 12 yards.

The points were made safe as left-back Jose Enrique crossed in from the left for substitute Nile Ranger to poke in.

The Magpies are currently enjoying a fine sequence of results and have now matched the club's best winning run since Kevin Keegan guided them to seven successive Premier League triumphs in 1996.

The first half was a lively affair with both sides having good opportunities to take the lead.

Coventry were a little lucky to escape conceding a penalty when centre-back Leon Barnett tangled with Peter Lovenkrands when clean through.

They almost grabbed the opening goal with Best's shot bouncing back from the bar, and then had McIndoe head the ball against the same piece of woodwork.

Newcastle took full advantage of their fortune when Ameobi picked up the ball in the box and fired past keeper Keiren Westwood after turning Barnett.

Freddy Eastwood and Aron Gunnarsson had chances to level but the win was secured on 81 minutes when forward Ranger banged in his first professional goal.

Coventry manager Chris Coleman:
"We were a lot better than we were on Sunday, but it's still another game that we haven't won.

"Sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees, you don't know where the next three points are coming from.

"Peterborough on Saturday is a bigger game; we can only get three points but at the moment it will feel like 20."

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton praised the character of his players after the 2-0 win at Coventry made it seven straight victories.

It was a shame we lost, we played well and created more clear cut chances than them but they had the better finishers :(
