Sky Blues have to settle for a point against Cod Army

Coventry City battled back to salvage a point against Fleetwood Town although they will be disappointed after dominating the second half.

Steven Pressley made just one enforced change, Ryan Haynes slotting in at left-back in place of Reda Johnson who is facing three weeks on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury in training.

The game got off to a bright start, both sides knocking the ball around sharply on the newly re-laid turf with Proctor firing a 20-yarder just wide of the home goal before O’Brien tested Maxwell from similar range.

Allsop had to pull off a finger-tip safe when Proctor cut in from the left to right in a right-foot shot but the lee[er was left helpless in the 18th minute as Evans whipped in a cross from the left and Webster rose unchallenged only to see the ball skim off the back of his head and deflect into the top corner.

It might have got worse in the 25th minute as Allsop reacted well to divert an Evans shot. And although Maxwell had to respond in kind at the other end when good work by Haynes and Fleck teed up a side-footed effort from McQuoid, Fleetwood threatened again on the half-hour as Sarcevic broke clear down the right but chipped the ball wide of the far post with Allsop stranded in no-man’s land.

City were finding it difficult to break down a defence with the best goals-against record in the division but McQuoid should have done better shortly before half-time when he sliced past the top corner from a good position.

City were quickly out of the traps in the second half but they were left fuming when Haynes, having twisted inside two defenders, went down under Sarcevic’s challenge but instead of signalling a penalty, Lee Collins booked the young defender for diving.

The referee came up with a decision more to the fans’ liking when he pulled back play for a foul on Maddison but the substitute’s free-kick from just outside the box was an easy catch for Maxwell.

And home frustration intensified on the hour as a spell of sustained pressure saw two fierce O’Brien shots charged down.
