Leeds United are reportedly planning to test the resolve of Coventry City with a big-money bid for Sammy Clingan – despite the Sky Blues slapping a “not for sale” tag on the midfielder. The Northern Ireland international and newly-installed Sky Blues captain has come on the radar of boss Simon Grayson, with United having enquired about the 27-year-old last week.
City, who have already lost two of their stars from last season in Keiren Westwood and Marlon King, are digging their heels in, with manager Andy Thorn issuing a “hands off” warning with Clingan, pictured left, a key man in his plans for the new season.
But Leeds aren’t thought to have been unduly put off with the Belfast-born defensive midfielder – well known to Whites no.2 and Northern Ireland assistant-boss Glyn Snodin – out of contract next summer, with the Sky Blues running the risk of losing him for nothing under the Bosman ruling next year.
Thorn has said he has received assurances from chairman Ken Dulieu that Clingan, 27, in outstanding form at the back end of last term, is not for sale despite the club’s ongoing financial problems.
