Chairman Ray Ranson’s right-hand man and close ally tendered his resignation this week – which has been accepted by a new-look Sky Blues board of directors – following concerns about the way the club is moving forward and recent changes in the boardroom.

Sources close to the 50-year-old banker and life-long City fan claim that the sale of teenage prodigy Conor Thomas to Liverpool last week for an estimated £1 million, if the deal is made permanent in the summer, was the final straw – going against Ranson’s vision when he took over the club three years ago to build a young and talented squad capable of taking the Sky Blues to the Premier League.

It is understood that Ranson also opposed the departure of Thomas, as he did the sales of Scott Dann to Birmingham for £3.5 million and Danny Fox to Celtic for £1.5 million in July 2009.

But a club source said: “Gary feels that SISU are losing sight of what they set out to do when they took over.
