Mr Clarke, who is chief executive of Coventry-based Century PR, has been an associate director of the Sky Blues for the past four years.

He was formerly a board director of the club in 1992-93 and before that was a vice president and an associate director from 1987-1992.

Coventry City chairman Ray Ranson welcomed the appointment.

He said: “John has been a great supporter of Coventry City over the years and this really takes that to another level.

“As an associate director, he has been involved with the process of reshaping the club over the past few years and this means he will continue to play a growing role.”

A Sky Blues fan all his life, Clarke was awarded the OBE for services to the community of Coventry in 2005.

He said: “Coventry City has made great strides as a club both on and off the field over the last three years.

“The club is in a far better position and is now committed to engage even more with our loyal fan base and indeed the local business community.’’

Last week, it was announced that director and former chairman Joe Elliott was leaving the board to become a life president of the club.
