London Tube trains ride to the rescue of Ricoh Arena railway service

Matchday train services to the Ricoh Arena could be back on the cards after a deal was struck to use refurbished London Underground carriages on the line between the stadium, Coventry city centre and Nuneaton.

At the moment just one train an hour carrying 75 passengers runs on the route but the new trains can carry three times as many people.

The “re-engineered” trains will be provided by Warwickshire engineering company Vivarail Ltd, as first revealed by the Telegraph last September.

The new Coventry Arena station opened in January and the council say they want to talk to Wasps and Coventry City “as soon as possible” to improve matchday services.

If all goes to plan the Class 230 prototype trains could be running by the festive period. The trains will be used for a trial period of 12 months.

The new trial will test performance, passenger experience and running costs, and could allow fans to travel between Coventry and Nuneaton for sporting events.
