Leeds United outclassed lowly Coventry City at Elland Road as they cruised to a fourth win in five Championship games and moved up to fifth in the table.

Daniel Farke’s side, who had only won one of their three previous home league games this season, pummelled the Sky Blues from the off but only had a Willy Gnonto strike to show for their first-half dominance.

City failed to register a single goal attempt in the first half and had it not been for a man-of-the-match display by keeper Ben Wilson would have been as good as beaten before Jayden Bogle’s neat finish made it 2-0 soon after the interval.

Coventry never looked capable of staging a comeback - and avoiding a fifth game without a win - and Leeds sealed it with just over 10 minutes remaining when substitute Joel Piroe fired the ball home after another fine team move.

Piroe’s third goal of the season, and third from the bench, was the least Leeds deserved and gave the scoreline a more realistic feel, much to the delight of a typically raucous home crowd.

The only blemish was a knee injury to Ethan Ampadu, which forced the defender to leave the pitch in the first half.

But aside from sweating on the fitness of their influential captain it was a near-perfect afternoon for the hosts.

Dutchman Piroe has only started one league game this term but has now scored in three of his last four appearances and his goal rounded off a Leeds performance which showed their ability at both ends of the pitch.

Wilson was forced into numerous fine saves, notably from Ilia Gruev and Largie Ramazani, while all three goals were well crafted, Junior Firpo laying on the opener for Gnonto and Bogle finishing calmly after playing a one-two with Ramazani.

The hosts had enjoyed 60% possession at that point, but then they defended resolutely and with little alarm against a Coventry side who only managed two attempts on target in the entire match.

And Piroe's strike ensured Leeds moved to within two points of leaders West Brom.

Coventry boss Mark Robins:

"We couldn't get a foothold on the game and when we won the ball back, we gave it straight back to them.

"You then can't build any sort of rhythm or get into the game – and that was the biggest disappointment of the first half.

"There's a mentality of taking an easy option at the moment rather than the right option. At 3-0 down it's easier to start to play because there's less pressure on you, the game's gone.

"Leeds is a different proposition than us. They've been in the Premier League a couple of seasons ago and then missed out last season. They have sold over £100million worth of talent but replaced them with very good players."
