Three goals in the space of seven scintillating minutes saw Coventry City blow away Peterborough United to make it a perfect five wins out of five at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Gus Hamer lit the Sky Blues touchpaper when he steered home from seven yards out on 57 minutes as Mark Robins’s men tore into the Posh, to leave them shell-shocked.

Viktor Gyokeres then made a brilliant run into the box to get on the end of a low Todd Kane cross to the far post to double the lead on 61 minutes.

And the big Swede then twisted and turned just inside the area and hit a shot that took a deflection off a defender to loop up over the keeper to make it 3-0 with 64 minutes on the clock.

City set the tone with some enterprising attacking play down the right where Todd Kane sent in a couple of threatening crosses in the opening three minutes, buoyed by a superb atmosphere with the home supporters right behind the team.

Gyokeres then cut into the box from the left and slipped the ball to Callum O’Hare who had two attempts on goal, albeit too tame to trouble the Posh keeper.

While the big and physical visitors enjoyed decent spells of possession, they struggled to hurt the Sky Blues in the first half an hour when City looked by far the more threatening with their approach play.

Clear cut chances were few and far between, however, as United defended in numbers, proving hard to break down at times.

Hamer had the fans on the edge of their seats when he intercepted a loose ball and pulled the trigger from just outside the D, only for his fizzing shot to lift over the bar.

Kane then cut in at the byline and pulled back in the six-yard box where O’Hare, facing the wrong way, improvised with an attempted back flick, only to miss the ball completely as the crowd gasped.

The momentum appeared to be building in City’s favour and the home side felt aggrieved on 37 minutes when Ian Maatsen pushed the ball past Joe Ward and nipped into the box where the Posh player shoved him to the deck, the Chelsea loan player immediately appealing for a penalty.

But referee Geoff Eltringham was having none of it and waved play on, much to the disgust of the Coventry faithful.

City ended the half strongly with Hamer sending a 20-yard free-kick narrowly over before Martyn Waghorn wasted a decent opportunity when Gyokeres won the ball on the edge of the box, only for the striker to lift his effort high over the bar.

City started the second half as they’d finished the first, with Gyokeres turning Dan Butler inside out on the right before firing across the face of the goal and just wide of the far post.

The Swede was then denied from close range when he was blocked a yard from the line as the Sky Blues went for it, causing Posh all manner of problems with wave after wave of attacks.

And Darren Ferguson’s men finally caved in on 57 minutes when Hamer steered the ball coolly into the back of the net from a parried save from the keeper.

The move started with Maatsen sending in an early cross to the six-yard box from the left which was blocked into the path of Waghorn who had a shot parried by the keeper into the path of the lurking Dutchman, who hit a precise finish.

Gyokeres then got in on the act when he tapped home at the far post from a superb low and early cross from the right, and then added his second of the night, and City’s third, when he teased his way into the area and hit a deflected shot over David Cornell to complete a brilliant team performance and send City up to second in the Championship ahead of Saturday's fixtures.

Coventry thrash Posh to go second

Coventry City moved up to second in the Championship as three goals in seven second-half minutes helped them cruise to a home win over Peterborough.

Sweden striker Viktor Gyokeres netted twice to continue the Sky Blues' perfect home record after a Gustavo Hamer tap-in broke the deadlock.

Peterborough offered little, managing just one shot on target.

Defeat means Posh are still without a point on the road this term.

Coventry had looked set to go top of the second tier for the first time since August 2009 but instead had to settle for second spot behind West Bromwich Albion, who netted a late winner against QPR.

After a one-sided first-half at The Coventry Building Society Arena, Hamer pounced on a loose ball to fire the hosts in front just before the hour mark.

And just four minutes later, Gyokeres doubled the advantage, tapping home a low Todd Kane cross.

Gyokeres then completed the scoring in the 64th minute, seeing a close-range strike deflect over a helpless David Cornell in the Peterborough goal.

It was a deserved result for Mark Robins' side who boosted their reputation as early pacesetters, with Gyokeres - signed from Brighton in the summer after a loan spell with the Sky Blues last term - taking his season's tally to seven goals in nine appearances.

Meanwhile, Peterborough striker Jonson Clarke-Harris played the full 90 minutes, with his club having appealed a recent FA sanction.

The ex-Coventry forward has been given a four-match ban and fined £5,300 over historical social media posts - but any potential suspension will not come into effect until the appeal is decided.

Coventry manager Mark Robins told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire:

"The first goal was important, that sort of deflated them a little.

"From then on we grew in stature and just took the game away from them. [Our strikers'] movement was brilliant, we were slick.

"I thought this was nothing more than we deserved and the atmosphere was electric. A great performance and a great result."
