Police have launched a search and rescue operation after TV doctor and columnist Michael Mosley went missing while holidaying on a Greek island.

Mosley’s wife, Dr Clare Bailey, raised the alarm after he failed to return back to their accommodation after embarking on a coastal walk on the Dodecanese island of Symi on Wednesday afternoon.

A police source told the Daily Mail there is “just no trace” of the 67-year-old after he left a beach to hike along a coastal path at around 1:30pm.

“Any and every attempt to track him down has not produced any result,” they said. “We have now asked the fire brigade to assist in the operation in the case that he may have slipped, tripped, fallen, even bitten by a snake, remaining injured somewhere.’

A post on a local Facebook group, which included a picture of the medic, read: “Have you seen this man? He set off to walk back from St Nick’s at about 13.30 and failed to make it home. His friends are concerned as it is six hours since they last saw him.

Known for his appearances on The One Show and This Morning, Dr Mosley is understood to have been on holiday with his wife Dr Clare Bailey, who raised the alarm.

Michael Mosley: Mystery deepens as CCTV shows he completed walk

Image

The mystery over the disappearance of Michael Mosley, the TV doctor, deepened on Friday night after The Telegraph obtained CCTV footage showing him walking past a cafe 20 minutes after he left his wife at a beach on a Greek holiday island.

The footage suggests he successfully completed a walk to the nearby town of Pedi after leaving Agios Nikolaos beach.

The presenter, known for his TV programmes and his Just One Thing podcast was reported to have left the beach on Wednesday at 13.30 local time.

The CCTV footage from the Blue Corner cafe in Pedi village appears to capture the broadcaster in the main street holding an umbrella roughly 20 minutes later.

The 10-second long clip dated 13.52, June 5 shows Dr Mosley carrying a purple umbrella walking past the cafe towards the marina.

He can be seen walking steadily with no visible injuries towards the marina and out of the village centre.

Locals had speculated that Dr Mosley may have lost his footing and fallen into the sea while walking along the path from the beach to Symi. Although the path remains largely flat, there are awkward rocks and loose scree which could lead to a walker tripping or slipping.

However the CCTV footage captured by the Blue Corner, which is on the far side of Pedi, suggests that he at least made it to the coastal village.

It is unclear whether he continued walking towards the town of Simy where he was staying with his wife Dr Claire Bailey.

But search and rescue teams are now concentrating their efforts on a two kilometre stretch of land between Pedi, Symi town and the port of Gialos, which has regular services to the Greek mainland.

Michael Mosley: body of TV presenter believed to have been found on Greek island, authorities say

Greek authorities have confirmed that the body of a man believed to be the missing British doctor Michael Mosley has been found on the island of Symi.

Mosley went missing after going for a coastal walk on the island.

“He has been found in the area of Ayia Marina,” the island’s deputy mayor Nikitas Grillas told the Guardian. “I can confirm that it is him.”

The discovery came on the fifth day of a massive air, land and sea operation to find the TV presenter and health guru who popularised intermittent fasting and designed the 5:2 diet.

Mosley, 67, was last seen when he set off hiking along St Nikolas beach on the island of Symi at 1.30pm local time on Wednesday.

His wife, Dr Clare Bailey, raised the alarm after he failed to return by 7.30pm. A search and rescue operation was launched to locate the doctor, who is best known for his appearances on The One Show and This Morning.

The search included police, firefighters, specially trained dogs, volunteers and a drone. Police were working on the assumption that Mosley may have been affected by the heat and slipped and fallen, perhaps from a height.

Mosley, a columnist for the Daily Mail, made a number of documentaries about diet and exercise, including the Channel 4 show Michael Mosley: Who Made Britain Fat? He was also part of the BBC series Trust Me, I’m a Doctor.

Dr Michael Mosley most likely died of heat stroke and exhaustion, mayor says

A body has been found in the search for TV doctor and columnist Michael Mosley, who went missing on a Greek island.

The body and an umbrella were discovered in a rocky area beside Agia Marina on Symi on Sunday after an extensive search operation led by emergency workers.

The 67-year-old TV personality was last seen by friends at Agios Nikolaos beach on Wednesday, before going for a walk to the centre of the island.

The body, which is yet to be formally identified, was discovered beneath a fence that runs around a bar on Agia Marina beach, which is surrounded by hilly, rocky terrain that runs down to the sea.

Helicopters have searched the area “every day”, staff at the bar said.

Agia Marina bar manager Ilias Tsavaris, 38, first saw the body alongside journalists after the island’s mayor “saw something” by the fence of the bar and alerted staff.

He said: “They saw it with the boat. The mayor came and saw something so that is when they called me and said ‘Hey they saw something go and check there’.

“They called me, they said ‘You know what we saw something from far away, can you go and check’ so I went there.

“So when I walked up I saw something like a body to make sure. You don’t see a dead body everyday, it is not a warzone, it’s summer you are supposed to have fun and swimming.

“He came from Pedi OK, and he walked not through the restaurant. If he had walked through there (the bar) we would have checked the cameras.

The discovery comes after a four-day search operation for the 67-year-old broadcaster, who first trained as a doctor before moving in to the world of broadcasting.

Emergency workers have been trying to locate Mosley ever since he disappeared during a walk to the centre of the island at about 1.30pm Greek time (11.30am BST) on Wednesday.

Many questioned how anyone could survive in the heat that topped 40C on the day Mosley disappeared.

Papakaloudoukas said the area where Mosley is believed to have travelled through is “difficult to pass” and is “only rocks”.

It is also populated by “loads” of snakes, he said.

Michael Mosley lay undiscovered for five days, CCTV shows

Dr Michael Mosley’s body lay undiscovered just yards from a beach resort for nearly five days, it emerged on Sunday, as his wife said he “so very nearly made it” to safety.

‌The broadcaster and author was found dead on Sunday morning after his disappearance while walking on the Greek island of Symi last Wednesday caused a major search and rescue operation.‌

CCTV footage shows Dr Mosley gingerly walking down a rocky mountain near the perimeter fence of the Agia Marina resort before he appears to stumble and fall out of view, just over two hours after he left his wife and friends.‌

His wife, Dr Clare Bailey Mosley, paid tribute to her “wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband”.

‌She said: “We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it. He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team.”

‌The local coroner said an initial examination had ruled out foul play as there were “no obvious injuries” to Dr Mosley’s body, adding: “It looks like it was a fall.”

‌A spokesperson for the coroner said they would need to establish whether he had a “medical episode” which would take some time.

A police source said they had ruled out any possibility of criminality but that it was currently impossible to determine the cause of the death.

Newly unearthed footage, captured by the Agia Marina bar’s security cameras at 3.44pm on Wednesday, suggests that Dr Mosley had made it over the mountain but was struggling to pick his way back to safety when he fell.

‌Dr Mosley stumbled out of view as he headed down towards the sea but did not appear to get up again. He was just a stone’s throw from the throngs of tourists relaxing on sun loungers on the other side of the chain link fence.

‌A customer could be seen walking past the bar’s nearby kiosk who could potentially have heard any shout for help.

‌Dr Mosley’s body was found after the mayor, Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas, and a TV crew on a boat spotted “something black” near to the fence at about 10.30am local time on Sunday morning.

‌Mr Papakaloudoukas called the bar manager, Ilias Tsavaris, and asked him to go and have a look.

Mr Tsavaris, who was accompanied by British journalists from organisations including the Telegraph, immediately saw the “glint from a watch” and a body.

‌He alerted the police who were at the scene 20 minutes later and Dr Mosley’s body was eventually removed on a stretcher after the coroner had arrived from Rhodes.
