The BBC has officially announced that a Death in Paradise spinoff is coming. But that's not all – it's also been confirmed that none other than Kris Marshall aka DI Humphrey Goodman is set to star.

Marshall appeared in the crime drama's third to sixth seasons, and his character quickly became one of the most popular in the show.

The unconventional DI led the island's police team in solving mysterious murders, and left viewers heartbroken when he decided to leave the crime-ridden paradise to venture across the pond with his new love and island tourist Martha Lloyd.

Now, five years later, Marshall will return as Humphrey alongside Sally Bretton's Martha in a new spinoff that will follow the couple as they "navigate a new life together in the idyll rural Britain" (via BBC).

Humphrey has taken on the position of DI in Martha's hometown, but as he'll soon discover, it's anything but peaceful.

In a statement confirming his return, Marshall said: "I had the best time playing Humphrey out in Guadeloupe and whilst I was delighted that he got his happy ending with Martha, I always wanted to know what happened next.

"So it's a joy to be putting his crumpled jacket back on and seeing how life has panned out for him back in the UK."

"Working with Sally is a dream, and I can't wait to continue Humphrey and Martha's story and solve a few seemingly impossible mysteries along the way."

Tommy Bulfin, BBC's drama commissioning editor, added: "We are delighted to welcome fan-favourite DI Humphrey Goodman back to the BBC. Luckily for us, his knack for cracking the trickiest crimes is as much needed in rural England as it was on the sun-kissed shores of the Caribbean.

"We cannot wait to see what he and Martha get up to next."

Filming is slated to begin in the UK later this year and further details, including additional casting, "will be announced in due course".

Death in Paradise airs on BBC One.

How can Sally Bretton be married Kris Marshall when she's already married to Lee Mack?
