The BBC pulled Have I Got News for You from the Friday night schedules following the tragic death of Sir David Amess MP in Essex.

The long-running satirical programme which regularly takes aim as politicians was not on as planned at 9pm on BBC One tonight (October 15).

Instead, the BBC showed an episode of Would I Lie to You.

Before HIGNFY was due to air, a continuity announcer said: "Following today's news events, some changes to tonight's schedule. We won't be showing Have I Got News For You or The Cleaner. Instead, there will be Miranda in half an hour after Would I Lie to You."

On the programme's website, a message reads: "Have I Got News For You, Series 62, Episode 2 will not broadcast on 15th October 2021 as previously planned. The page will update with new schedule information when confirmed."

The Cleaner, a black comedy starring Greg Davies, is also about a subject matter that the BBC clearly felt was not appropriate to be shown tonight.

Broadcasters will often pull or reschedule programmes if the subject matter clashes with major news, or elections.

Episodes are often reshown at a later date or put on streaming services.

And the show's twitter feed said: "The BBC have pulled tonight’s Have I Got News For You following today’s shocking events. The show will be broadcast early next week."

In May 2019, an episode of Have I Got News For You was pulled due to the Euro elections.

It featured Change UK acting leader MP Heidi Allen and the BBC said it wasn't appropriate to feature political party leaders.

The show, hosted by Private Eye Ian Hislop and comedian Paul Merton, began in 1990 on BBC Two before moving to BBC One in 2000.

It was hosted by Angus Deayton until 2002, but he left the show after revelations in the tabloids about his private life. It has since had guest presenters, including Boris Johnson and William Shatner.
