A sculpture which is hoped to become a new national landmark is to be installed on the former Ikea building in Coventry as part of an upcoming Sky Arts TV show.

The broadcaster is launching a new series which will air in September, with artists from across the country to take part in six heats to compete to create the UK’s next major landmark.

Viewers will be able to see the winning piece in Sky Art’s ‘Landmark’ series when the final episode airs on Monday, October 18.

Around £250,000 will be spent on the Coventry piece.

Phil Edgar-Jones, director of Sky Arts and Entertainment, said: “For our new series Landmark we wanted to make a piece of art which would connect with the history of Coventry and would allow us to leave something for people to enjoy for years to come.

“We’re so impressed with everything Coventry is doing as City of Culture and felt there was a really fruitful partnership we could forge with the city this year.”

Located on the former IKEA building, the new landmark will sit on a site which Coventry City Council has already agreed to turn into a national Collections Centre showcasing art and heritage.

Councillor David Welsh, whose portfolio covers arts and culture, said he hoped the new piece of art will become a popular tourist attraction for Coventry.

He said: “Art and culture has an important role to play in the regeneration of an area and this is a landmark piece that will be seen from junction eight of the ring road and from Croft Road, which is one of our main bus routes into and out of the city centre.

“Art in our public spaces can be the subject of fierce debate and, although I cannot say anything about the winning design, I am confident it will soon become a popular visual landmark in the city centre.”

Broadcaster, DJ and author Gemma Cairney will present the seven-part series, which will begin on Sky Arts and Freeview on September 1 and will culminate with the unveiling of a new national public artwork which will be revealed in the final episode on October 18.
