The series 6 finale of hit cop show Line of Duty has been confirmed by the BBC to be the most-watched episode of any drama since modern records began in 2002, not including soaps.

The episode, which aired on Sunday night (May 2), attracted 12.8 million overnight viewers – surpassing last week's record of 11 million – and took 56.2% of the UK's TV audience.

The last time a TV drama got higher overnight viewing figures was an episode of ITV's Heartbeat in February 2001, which attracted 13.2 million.

Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio shared his response to the news, referencing some fans' ultimate disappointment in the way that series 6 was wrapped up.

"We're honoured and flattered by the viewing figures for #LineofDuty6," he tweeted. "We knew attempting to explore the real nature of corruption in our society wouldn't appeal to everyone, but we do sincerely thank you all for watching.

"It's been our privilege to share your Sunday nights."

The finale brought a years-long storyline to its climax about the identity of 'H', by revealing the bumbling Detective Superintendent Ian Buckells was actually the OCG's point-man.

Many viewers have branded this an anti-climax, and some members of the cast have since defended creator Jed Mercurio's choices. DI Arnott actor Martin Compston urged fans to manage their expectations.

"Hey folks, now the madness is slightly dying down just want to thank everybody who reached out about last night and the series as a whole, we've truly been blown away by the reaction and love for the show, we're proud of it," he wrote.

"Fully understand it wasn't the 'urgent exit' type ending some anticipated but appreciate you sticking with us."
