The BBC has launched its extended Red Button service, just in time for Glastonbury and Wimbledon

The service will provide extra coverage, primarily for viewers with TVs or boxes that aren't connected to the internet or aren't compatible with the BBC's newer streamed services and for those who want to be able to record some of the coverage.

For Sky, Freesat and Virgin Media viewers will now be able to find BBC Red Button 2-6 and BBC Red Button HD alongside BBC Red Button 1 in their channel list.

  • On Sky, the Red Button service can be directly selected on channels 981-987
  • On Freesat, they are on channels 980-986.
  • On Virgin Media UK, they can be found on channel 990-996.

Meanwhile on Freeview, the main BBC Red Button service continues on channel 601, but with extra streams in some areas on channels 602-606. The limited coverage is due to the fact the BBC has to hire out some commercial capacity, which has lower coverage, as it doesn't have capacity of its own to carry extra channels for just a few weeks a year.

Most current connected/smart TVs and boxes (not Sky) can access an enhanced version of the BBC Red Button, dubbed Red Button+, which streams content via the internet instead of relying on the traditional linear streams.

The internet option provides more streams and more options to watch the extra coverage in HD.

Mobile devices can access extra coverage of Wimbledon via the BBC Sport App and iPlayer. Glastonbury coverage is available across iPlayer and the BBC Sounds App.
