The BBC have announced that there won't be a Film 2019, or a Film 2020 or Film 2021 etc.

The long-running movie review show has been going since 1971, and although it won't continue in its current form, the broadcaster is working on some sort of replacement.

A statement from the Beeb reads: "In 2019 we will be creating an enhanced offer for lovers of film both on television and online.

"We're still working through the details and will have more news about what this will look like soon."

The first year of the show only aired in the South East region, before airing across the whole of the UK with the legendary Barry Norman as host.

Jonathan Ross took over in 1999 and hosted until 2010, when Claudia Winkleman stepped up to the plate. After she departed in 2016, a rotating line-up of guest hosts including Charlie Brooker (new Black Mirror out today, FYI!) and Zoe Ball took over.

As noted on Twitter by film critic Mark Kermode, the BBC's Film Review show on Radio 5 Live continues, as does The Film Review on BBC News. Interestingly, Kermode's own YouTube channel Kermode Uncut also released its final episode today (December 28).

While it's sad to see such a long-running programme come to an end, perhaps a more modern and up-to-date alternative would be better overall.
