The whole country was watching (pretty much)

If it felt like the whole country was watching England vs Sweden yesterday (July 7), that's because they probably were.

According to the BBC, the World Cup quarter-final match that saw England triumph over Sweden earned a massive 89% share of the television audience, with a peak audience of 19.9 million.

Which, of course, doesn't include the crowds gathered to watch the game in various public places around the country – but is still pretty darn impressive.

The game also set a new online record for live viewing on the BBC too, with 3.8 million viewers (out of 3.9 million total who watched online) watching the match live – right up until iPlayer crashed out across all platforms, that is.

Those figures made the game the BBC's highest online-viewed live programme ever, beating the previous record of 3 million which was set just a few weeks ago with the England vs Tunisia game.

Of course, Gary Lineker was once again overjoyed by yesterday's viewing numbers, writing: "Crikey. Humongous figures again for England. Nearly 20 million on a hot sunny afternoon is incredible, especially given how many watched in pubs, communal gatherings etc...that don't register.

"And that share must be close to a record. Football's coming to homes everywhere."

While BBC One will air the next World Cup semi-final match on Tuesday, July 10, the next England game will be shown on ITV when England plays Croatia in their semi-final match on Wednesday, July 11.
