Tony Booth has died at the age of 85.

The Till Death Us Do Part and Coronation Street actor, also known as Anthony Booth, passed away on Monday (September 25).

Booth, who was also a political activist and the father of Cherie Blair, had been battling Alzheimer's disease for 13 years, although his family have not confirmed whether his death was linked to the disease.

"It is with sadness we announce the death of Antony Booth, actor and political campaigner," said his wife Steph in a statement.

"Tony passed away late last night with close family members in attendance. The family ask for their privacy to be respected at this time."

Booth appeared in Coronation Street in 1960 as Malcolm Wilkinson, a boyfriend of Christine Hardman.

He later moved to the BBC to star in Till Death Us Do Part from 1965, playing the left-wing son-in-law to right-wing bigot Alf Garnett (Warren Mitchell), a role which brought him widespread fame.

The actor's later roles included co-starring in the Confessions of a ... sex comedy films (such as Confessions of a Window Cleaner and Confessions of a Driving Instructor) alongside Robin Askwith.

Booth was also a political campaigner, while his barrister daughter, Cherie Blair, is married to former prime minister Tony Blair.
