ITV2 is letting go of two high-profile U.S. acquisitions

The youth-skewing digi-net has opted not to renew their licensing agreements for the Allison Janney/Anna Farris comedy series Mom and the Elyes Gabel fronted drama Scorpion, TVWise can reveal.

ITV2 originally picked up Mom from Warner Bros International Television Distribution in 2013 and aired the show’s first four seasons between 2014 and 2017. Scorpion, distributed by CBS Studios International, landed on the channel in 2014 and recently wrapped its third season.

To some extent, the writing had been on the wall for Mom. After being given a plum prime-time slot for its first three seasons, the show was moved to an early morning (12:55 am) slot for season four; a move that did little to shore up ratings.

Scorpion is more of a head-scratcher. The show was a prime acquisition for the channel and aired in a prime-time slot across all three seasons. It also rated very well for ITV2; frequently bringing in more than 500K viewers per episode and ranked as one of the channel’s most viewed shows.

That being the case, the decision to drop Scorpion is thought to be more of a strategic or commercial one, rather than being ratings driven. As things presently stand, both Mom and Scorpion are now without a first run UK broadcaster. Securing a new UK buyer for Mom may be a tough sell for Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, but Scorpion is not expected to be without a UK home for too long. No word on if any other broadcasters are circling, but Netflix UK, who hold SVOD rights, are a possibility.
