The news was confirmed by his sons Nathan and Griffith Furst in a Facebook post on Saturday (June 17).
"Actor and comedian Stephen Furst died on June 16, 2017 due to complications from diabetes," they wrote.
"Steve has a long list of earthly accomplishments. He was known to the world as an brilliant and prolific actor and filmmaker, but to his family and many dear friends he was also a beloved husband, father and kind friend whose memory will always be a blessing."
Furst was famous for his roles as Kent 'Flounder' Dorfmann in National Lampoon's Animal House, and as Vir Cotto in Babylon 5.
J Michael Straczynski, who created Babylon 5 and co-created Sense8, paid tribute to the late actor, tweeting: "On behalf of everyone who worked on Babylon 5, Stephen Furst will be missed profoundly and everlastingly."
He also said: "Lost Babylon 5 Main cast: Michael O'Hare, Andreas Katsulas, Jeff Conaway, Jerry Doyle, Richard Biggs, now Stephen Furst, all too soon."
