...despite praise from critics and viewers

The new series of Top Gear may have won approval from fans who watched last night's opener (March 6), but - sadly - it seems there were actually a lot less people watching.

The programme returned to BBC Two last night for its 24th series, this time without former host Chris Evans, who resigned from the programme last year. However, fan-favourite Matt Le Blanc was back alongside presenters Chris Harris and Rory Reid.

After receiving praise from those who tuned in, it has since been revealed that the episode actually had almost 2 million fewer viewers than the show's opener last year.

Last night's instalment was watched by an average of 2.8 million people, according to overnight data, while Chris Evans's debut reached 4.4 million last year.

So we're sure he isn't feeling smug at all.

Sunday's episode featured a trip to Kazakhstan and an interview with Scottish actor James McAvoy which went down well with viewers.

However, troubled brewed when a clip of Matt LeBlanc swearing aired pre-watershed.

Oops.

The presenters were watching a game of kokpar (like polo, but with a goat carcass being chucked into a goal) in Kazakhstan when he blurted out the naughty language.

"I gotta say, this is right up there with some of the grossest sh*t I've ever seen," he said.

Oh dear.

Top Gear continues Sunday (March 12) on BBC Two.

Haven't watched it for years. It's outdated and no longer relevant.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
