It was the worst of times for the BBC's lavish drama Dickensian, which has been cancelled after just one series.

The show premiered to an audience of 5 million on Boxing Day last year - but ratings slumped to just 2 million by the end of its marathon 20-episode run.

"We are incredibly proud of Dickensian," said the BBC. "We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new shows."

The drama, which was a "mash-up" of Charles Dickens' stories, featured 28 of his characters, including Fagin from Oliver Twist, Scrooge from A Christmas Carol and Miss Havisham from Great Expectations.

Written by EastEnders veteran Tony Jordan and costing nearly £10 million to make, there were high hopes for a future series.
