Death in Paradise returned for its fifth series to easily top the ratings on Thursday night, proving that sunny murders are much more welcome in January than dreary period dramas.
The BBC One show attracted an average overnight audience of 6.82 million (30.2%) at 9pm. This is down by around 100,000 from last year's opener. Earlier, Dickensian continued with 3.06m (14.1%) at 8pm.
On ITV, new drama Jericho opened with 2.96m (14.1%) at 9pm (301k/2.2% on +1). Birds of a Feather was also back with 3.86m (16.8%) at 8.30pm (189k/0.8%).
Channel 5's Celebrity Big Brother dipped to 1.85m (8.2%) at 9pm (193k/1.2%). On Sky1, A League of Their Own returned with 433k (1.9%) at 9pm.
