Over 12m tune in to watch the New Year's Eve fireworks

The New Year's Eve TV ratings are in, and millions of us saw in 2016 by watching the fireworks on BBC One.

12.54m (62.9%) enjoyed the display over London at midnight yesterday (December 31), according to overnight ratings data.

Meanwhile, the two separate parts of Bryan Adams Rocks Big Ben, which were broken up by the fireworks, were watched by 6.08m (34.4%) and 6.82m (45.2%) at 11.30pm and 00.10am respectively.

The New Year's eve celebrations also took place on BBC Two, with 2.91m (19.6%) tuning in from 11.10pm to watch Sir Tom Jones, Jeff Beck, James Bay and Jess Glynne perform on Jools' Annual Hootenanny.

Earlier in the evening, 1.94m (10%) tuned in to watch the ninth instalment of Christmas University Challenge at 7.30pm.

Gareth Malone's Great Choir Reunion also managed 1.5m (8.1%) at 8pm.

Later, Chris O'Dowd movie The Sapphires picked up 917k (5.3%) and Live at the Apollo was seen by 1.16m (7%).

Earlier in the evening on BBC One, 3.95m (20.3%) tuned in at 7pm for ​Celebrity Mastermind​, followed by 2.05m for a repeat of ​Roald Dahl's Esio Trot.​

​Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie ​entertained 4.2m (24.5%) at 9.15pm, followed by 4.47m (27.3%) for The Graham Norton Show's New Year's Eve special with Jennifer Lawrence and Eddie Redmayne.

Over on ITV, Panda Babies boasted 2.57m (14.5%) at 8.30pm, and a repeat of the Cilla Black edition of Piers Morgan's Life Stories aired to 964k (5.7%) at 10.05pm.

Elsewhere, the two parts of The Nation's Favourite Bond Song picked up 844k (5%) and 786k (5.1%) at 11.05pm and 00.10am respectively, while the ITV News at midnight picked up 1m (5%) viewers.

Channel 4's Celebrity Couples Come Dine With Me managed 619k (3.2%), TFI New Year's Eve was seen by 1.27m (6.7%) and Alan Carr's New Year's Specstacular picked up 1.33m (7.8%).

Finally, a repeat of Channel 5's Britain's Best Loved Double Acts was seen by 521k (3.1%).
