Doctor Who and Call the Midwife will be back, with Luther (December 15) and Sherlock (January 1) also returning.

EastEnders promises "tragedy" at Christmas - what else? - but a Mrs Brown's Boys special and two episodes of Catherine Tate's Nan will be bringing the laughs.

Offering up some variety will be the two-part Strictly Come Dancing final, and the Christmas special, with returnees including Abbey Clancy and Harry Judd.

Strictly host Bruce Forsyth will also be inviting Alexander Armstrong to host another star-studded Hall of Fame special, while Top of the Pops will be back for its traditional Christmas and New Year's specials.

A comedy quartet - Still Open All Hours, Boomers, Citizen Khan and Not Going Out - will all air specials, while ambitious new dramas And Then There Were None and Dickensian are also part of the schedule.

David Walliams' book Billionaire Boy has been adapted for the screen, while the actor and comic will also pair up with Joanna Lumley for sketch show Walliams & Friend.

Further family viewing will be provided by animation Stick Man featuring the voice of Martin Freeman, Shaun the Sheep: The Farmer's Llamas and Harry Hill in The Further Adventures Of Professor Branestawm.

The big names of British comedy will also get a showing - with The John Bishop Christmas Show, Michael McIntyre's Big Christmas Show and documentary Peter Kay: 20 Years of Funny.

Other big names getting involved will include David Beckham - with his For The Love Of The Game documentary - and David Attenborough - presenting a new three-part series on the Great Barrier Reef.

Would I Lie To You, Pointless and The Graham Norton Show will all have festive editions, while other highlights include Celebrity Mastermind, a special Take That tour documentary and the annual Sports Personality of the Year event on December 20.
