Alex Kingston's return to Doctor Who was seen by 6.6m (35.3%) last night, according to early ratings figures.
'The Time of Angels' saw Kingston reprise her role as River Song in an episode that also featured the return of fan favourites The Weeping Angels.
Last night's episode, which aired between 6.20pm and 7.05pm, was up around 200k on last week's episode.
The second episode of Britain's Got Talent was the most-watched programme of the day by far, averaging 10.26m (44.8%) for ITV1 in the 8pm hour. ITV2 spinoff show Britain's Got More Talent followed with 1.21m (5.5%) and 302k (1.7%) on timeshift.
Earlier on ITV1, Best of You've Been Framed put in 2.96m (17.4%) in the 6pm hour, then gameshow The Whole 19 Yards kept a steady 4.18m (21.3%).
After Got Talent at 9pm, The Prisoner dropped to a dismal 1.77m (8%).
The latest Over The Rainbow performances show averaged 4.99m (24.9%) for BBC One between 7.05pm and 8.10pm, then The National Lottery: Who Dares Wins appealed to 3.97m (17.4%). The latest visit to Casualty took 5.52m (24.9%) from 9pm.
A repeat of Channel 4's SAS: The Real Story interested 824k (3.6%) at 8pm, then a screening of Borat was seen by 1.4m (6.7%) and 222k (1.4%) on timeshift.
BBC Two tribute documentary Malcolm McLaren: Artful Dodger appealed to 584k (2.5%) between 8.15pm and 9pm, then repeats of Have I Got News For You and Frank Skinner's Opinionated delivered 2.35m (10.6%) and 1.47m (7%).
New episodes of CSI: NY and Law & Order had 1.81m (8.2%) and 1.25m (6.9%) for Five from 9pm. Earlier, 988k (4.3%) watched a repeat of NCIS.
BBC One secured a victory in primetime overall, with an average share of 23.7% to ITV1's 21.6%. Channel 4 was third with 5.2% (+1: 0.7%), followed by Five with 5.8% and BBC Two with 5.6%.
