Benaud had been undergoing radiation treatment for skin cancer since November last year.

He was reportedly admitted to a hospital in Sydney and passed away in his sleep surrounded by his wife Daphne and other family members.

Benaud was a pioneering leg-spin bowler and played in 63 Tests including 28 as captain. He retired in 1964 to pursue a career in broadcasting.

He undertook a successful commentary career in England and his final UK broadcast came during the 2005 Ashes series.

Benaud continued to work for Channel Nine in Australia until 2013.
