Earlier this month, the BBC reportedly asked the One Show host to shave after he sported new facial hair on the programme.

Various celebrities spoke out in support of Chiles and he has now beaten comedian Billy Connolly to the Beard Liberation Front's award.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the organisation's founder Keith Flett said: "Chiles's beard has been controversial, but BLF supporters see it as striking an important blow for beard liberation at the BBC."

Flett added that there is currently nothing to protect hirsute people from discrimination in the workplace.

"Unfortunately there is no protection in British law against discrimination on the grounds of beard wearing, as there is in the United States," he said. "Employers seem to have a prejudice against beards and the BBC is a point in case.

"They seem to think that if you are wearing a beard you can't be fully trusted. Hence they will tolerate Noel Edmonds wearing a beard for an entertainment programme, but they frown on news or current affairs presenters being hirsute - unless they are only on the radio."

Chiles has reportedly claimed that he will only shave off the beard if The One Show wins an award.
