Between 1pm and 11.15pm, live tennis averaged 4.22m (28.6%), with a peak of over 8m tuning in to see Andy Murray progress to the last 16 in the latest-ever finish to a Wimbledon match.

The BBC's flagship channel pulled scheduled editions of Casualty, John Barrowman's Tonight's the Night and In It To Win It from its schedule.

Meanwhile, ITV1 was severely dented by the tennis, with Primeval (6pm) and You Cannot Be Serious! (7pm) sinking to new lows of 1.85m (11.6%) and 1.24m (7.3%). They added 345k (1.9%) and 122k (0.6%) respectively on ITV1 +1.

Movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix attracted 2.39m (11.7%) and 271k (1.3%) on timeshift, giving ITV its best audience of the night.

Channel 4 performed reasonably well with Iron Man pulling in 1.17m (5.7%) from 7.30pm and adding 285k (1.4%) on +1. The Million Pound Drop Live followed with a solid 1.04m (5.7%) and 106k (1%).

Big Brother, airing earlier at 9pm, drew 975k (4.5%) for Channel 5 and 132k (0.7%) on +1, while NCIS appealed to 955k (4.7%) earlier on.

Elsewhere, a 7pm repeat of The Many Faces of Les Dawson (1.18m/6.6%) was the only time BBC Two topped a million viewers. Coast (972k/4.9%) and The Hollow Crown (726k/3.6%) were screened later on.

Classic episodes of Doc Martin (973k/4.9%) and Lewis (1.18m/5.7%) helped ITV3 beat both BBC Two and Channel 5 in peak time.

Overall, BBC One topped primetime with 31.7% versus ITV1's 9.6% (+1: 1.3%). Channel 4 claimed third place with 5.4% (+1: 1.2%), just ahead of ITV3's 5.2%. BBC Two followed with 4.6%, while Channel 5 had 4% (+1: 0.3%).
