COVENTRY MESSAGE BOARD

When I was about, what, 11 or 12, I went with my parents to see a show put on in the old Broad Street studios of ATV in Birmingham, when it was still effectively a theatre. The show was hosted by McDonald Hobley and Anne Aston (then Anne Lloyd); I believe the show was the Golden Shot. However, I can find no reference to McDonald Hobley hosting the Golden Shot, and my wife doesn't remember Hobley hosting it either. Does anyone out there have any information??? Of course, everyone remembers Bob Monkhouse hosting it, but he wasn't the first or last to do so.

I clearly remember the participants' orange faces, and McDonald Hobley calling Anne Aston "Orange Bonce". The show was broadcast in black and white, and the garish make-up was needed to show the faces properly on screen - without it, they looked like ghouls.

The original presenter of the Golden Shot was Canadian Jackie Rae. He did fourteen episodes before handing over to Bob Monkhouse. They were the only two presenters during the black & white period. It was not unusual though for a different presenter to be used as a warm-up man before going live.
