Young James Herriot's second episode pulled in 4.32m (18.6%) for BBC One on Monday night, overnight data suggests.
The veterinary drama adaptation dropped 1.65m viewers from its Sunday night premiere. Earlier in the evening, A Question of Sport amused 4.54m (18.6%) at 8.30pm.
Over on BBC Two, The Bleak Old Shop of Stuff attracted 1.84m (7.5%) at 8.30pm, before Rob Brydon's chatshow tickled 1.3m (5.9%). Never Mind The Buzzcocks followed with 1.66m (7.9%) at 10pm.
ITV1's evening was dominated by an extended celebrity edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, which quizzed 4.5m (18.2%) between 8.30pm and 10pm, while a further 128k watched on +1. Earlier, Countrywise Kitchen served up 2.83m (11.1%) at 8pm.
The Year The Earth Went Wild captured 1.61m (6.5%) for Channel 4 at 8pm with an extra 231k on +1 (0.9%), before King of Christmas Lights dazzled 1.89m (7.6%) with another 336k (1.7%) tuning in on +1. Festive gameshow Home For The Holidays dipped to 650k (3.4%) at 10pm.
On Channel 5, Charley Boorman's Extreme Frontiers excited 7.33m (2.95) at 8pm, before the movie Step Brothers amused 1.43m (6.5%).
A repeat of Lewis on ITV3 was the biggest multichannel winner of the evening, pulling in 884k (6.5%).
Sky1's Terra Nova remained strong with 539k (2.1%), while Only Connect puzzled 512k (2.1%) on BBC Four.
BBC One won primetime with 20.3% across the evening, ahead of ITV1's 19.7% (0.5% on +1). BBC Two collected 8.0%, Channel 4 picked up 5.25% (0.9% on +1) and Channel 5 snared 4.74%.
