Ratings: 'This Is England 88' premieres to 2.2m on Channel 4

This Is England '88 averaged 2.23m from 10pm with a 12.8% share on Tuesday night, according to overnight figures.

An additional 345k (3.9%) tuned in to the premiere on +1.

It was a strong night for Channel 4 as one-off show My Big Fat Gypsy Christmas attracted an impressive 5.11m (20.5%) from 9pm (+1: 723k/4%). The Food Hospital served 1.49m (6.3%) earlier (+1: 124k/0.5%).

BBC One's Holby City treated 5.46m (23%) from 8pm that night with Death in Paradise in the 9pm hour and Imagine... from 10.35pm picking up 5.32m (21.4%) and 1.02m (8.6%) respectively.

ITV1 struggled in comparison, airing The Adventurer's Guide to Britain (2.68m/11.7%), High Stakes (1.97m/8.3%) and My Child's Not Perfect (1.64m/6.6%).

MasterChef: The Professionals cooked up 3.29m (13.9%) from 8pm on BBC Two, preceded by Victorian Farm Christmas (1.43m/6.3%). Money earned 1.87m (7.5%) in the 9pm hour before Life's Too Short amused 821k (4.1%).

Crime procedural CSI: Miami investigated 1.64m (6.6%) for Channel 5 in the 9pm hour, while an episode of the original CSI drew in 843k (4.5%).

Overall, BBC One won primetime with 23.9%. ITV1 finished with 11.5% (+1: 0.4%) with Channel 4 just behind on 10.8% (+1: 1.4%). BBC Two had 8.4% and Channel 5 took 4%.

On BBC Three, Don't Tell the Bride attracted 508k (2%) from 9pm.
