ITV2's TOWIE picking up the 'YouTube Audience Award' at the end of the evening was the surprise of the night, beating BBC One's Sherlock, cult drama The Killing and Channel 4's Big Fat Gypsy Weddings to the title.

Daniel Rigby grabbing the 'Best Actor' gong was another shock result as his turn in Eric and Ernie triumphed over more mainstream performances from Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Jim Broadbent (Any Human Heart) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock).

Vicky McClure earned the 'Best Actress' title for Channel 4's This Is England '86.

EastEnders won the battle of the soaps taking home the 'Continuing Drama' gong, ahead of Waterloo Road, Coronation Street and Casualty.

Sherlock bagged the 'Best Drama' title and Martin Freeman earned the 'Best Supporting Actor' accolade for his role as Dr Watson. Lauren Socha won the 'Best Supporting Actress' gong for her part in Misfits, ahead of Jessie Wallace, Lynda Baron (The Road To Coronation Street) and Gillian Anderson (Any Human Heart).

The X Factor missed out in the 'Entertainment Programme' category, losing out to Phillip Schofield's gameshow The Cube.

BBC Four's Danish import The Killing made up for losing out in the Audience Award by triumphing in the 'Best International' battle over Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire and Glee.

Sir Trevor McDonald was granted the BAFTA Fellowship for his extensive broadcasting career, while Comic Relief's co-founder Peter Bennett-Jones took home the 'Special Award'.

The host for the evening, Graham Norton, also went home with a gong for 'Entertainment Performance' for his BBC One chatshow.
