BBC One trounces ITV1 on Saturday

BBC One's World Cup quarter-final coverage put in a strong performance last night, according to overnight figures.

Paraguay v Spain averaged a respectable 6.01m (31.6%) between 7pm and 10pm, with a peak of 8.25m (39.4%) at 9pm. Earlier, Germany v Argentina logged an impressive 5.02m (40.3%), with a high of 6.97m (51.2%) at 4.30pm.

Over on ITV1, Animals Do The Funniest Things amused 2.59m (15.5%), then a classic episode of Midsomer Murders was watched by 2.72m (13.4%).

Meanwhile, Big Brother suffered its usual Saturday drop, with just 1.72m (8.3%) tuning in at 9pm, while a further 376k (2.2%) watched on timeshift. Prior to that, The Magnificent Seven delivered 1.24m (7.1%) to Channel 4.

BBC Two repeats of Dad's Army and Stephen Fry On Wagner interested 1.36m (7%) and 750k (3.6%) at 8.10pm and 8.40pm respectively, after which Have I Got A Bit More News For You entertained 1.84m (9.5%).

NCIS brought in 726k (3.7%) for Five at 8pm. Later, CSI: Miami and CSI attracted 973k (4.7%) and 1.24m (7%).

Overall, BBC One claimed outright victory in primetime with 28.8% to ITV1's lacklustre 12.6%. Channel 4 was third with 7% (+1: 0.8%), while BBC Two and Five took 5.9% and 4.4% of the audience.

Elsewhere, Family Guy topped the multichannel ratings for the second day in a row, with a repeat of the popular animated series fetching 610k (4.7%).
