The Appreciation Index - or AI - measures how much the audience enjoyed the programme, with a score of over 85 considered excellent.

While 'The Big Bang' pulled in just 5.09m viewers for BBC One, the episode managed to score 89 - the best score yet for the show's fifth series. The score was also the highest on any of the four main channels on Saturdays, Doctor Who News Page reports.

Previous series finales have also performed well on the AI, with the final episodes of series 1 and 2 both hitting 89, while the climaxes to series 3 and 4 scored 88 and 91 respectively.

Behind the scenes show Doctor Who Confidential also scored well, with a figure of 86.
