The BBC's trend of bringing back nostalgic comedies might have worked well for Still Open All Hours, but unfortunately the Porridge revival hasn't fared as well with viewers.

The broadcaster has decided to pull the plug on the series, which starred Kevin Bishop as the grandson of Ronnie Barker's Norman Stanley Fletcher.

A spokesperson for the Beeb told Digital Spy: "We are very proud of the show and delighted that we had the chance to connect comedy writing giants Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais back with a mainstream audience on BBC One.

"Whilst we currently don't have any plans for a second helping of Porridge there are lots of exciting new comedies coming soon to BBC One for audiences to sink their teeth into including Home from Home, Warren and Mister Winner."

The revived Porridge originally aired as a one-off special as part of the 2016 'Landmark Sitcom Season', which also saw new instalments of Are You Being Served?, Keeping Up Appearances and Goodnight Sweetheart.

Unlike those shows, Porridge was given a full six-episode series order, which aired last year.

Reactions to the revived series were... let's just say, not good, so perhaps it isn't completely surprising that the Beeb opted against another run.

Having said that, the BBC's other sitcom Mrs Brown's Boys gets routinely savaged and that's still going strong.

They should have left it as a one-off along with all the other 'revivals'.
