The Kennedys is axed by BBC One after a single series

BBC One has axed its sitcom The Kennedys after a single series.



Emma Kennedy - creator of the biographical series - confirmed that the show would not return in a blog post.

"Bottom line - we did pretty well for a series one comedy but not well enough as series 8 of Gogglebox and that, I'm afraid, is sort of it," she wrote.

"Viewing figures are the holy grail of channels, some more than others and we were on a channel for whom viewing figures are very important.

"We were the second highest rated non-audience comedy of 2015. However, when you compare our show to audience sitcoms like Mrs Brown's Boys and Miranda, we're nowhere near their viewing figures."

The Kennedys charted a young Emma's eccentric childhood and starred Dan Skinner and Katherine Parkinson as her parents.

In her post, Kennedy suggested that the "gentle" sitcom would've been a "much better fit for BBC Two" - but explained that the channel had turned The Kennedys down.

"The then-controller, Janice Hadlow, didn't want it. If it wasn't for BBC One, it would never have been made in the first place and for this, I shall always be thankful."

BBC Two also declined to pick up the show after BBC One dropped it.

Six episodes of The Kennedys aired in October and November 2015.​
