Strictly Come Dancing beats X Factor on Sunday night

Strictly Come Dancing came out on top in the X Factor ratings battle on Sunday by nearly a million viewers.

It wasn't all bad for Simon Cowell's singing competition though, as its latest Six Chair Challenge instalment rose to a Sunday peak this series. It climbed to an average overnight audience of 7.14m (29.7%) at 7pm on ITV (443,000/1.9% on +1).

BBC One's Strictly averaged 8.09m (33.1%) for its results show at 7.15pm. During the overlap, Strictly peaked at 7.45pm with 8.33m, while X Factor attracted 6.57m.

Elsewhere on ITV, the France vs Ireland game at the Rugby World Cup scored 4.05m (25.1%) at 4.30pm, while Downton Abbey rose slightly from last week to 7.04m (30.3%) at 9pm (498k/3.3%).

On BBC One, Countryfile appealed to 5.68m (28.5%) at 6.15pm, while Antiques Roadshow brought in 5.81m (23.9%) at 8pm. From Darkness continued with 3.16m (13.4%) at 9pm, and Sir Alex Ferguson: Secrets of Success was seen by 1.84m (16.6%) at 10.30pm.

BBC Two's documentary Earth's Wildest Waters amazed 897k (3.7%) at 8pm, followed by Britain's Ultimate Pilots with 1.22m (5.2%) at 9pm and Family Guy with 1.04m (5.9%) at 10pm.

On Channel 4, Homeland returned with 1.36m (5.8%) at 9pm (230k/1.5%), after Men in Black III entertained 1.39m (5.8%) at 7pm (310k/1.3%).

Channel 5's showing of Jason Statham movie Parker thrilled 1.17m (6.5%) at 9pm (193k/1.8%). On ITVBe, TOWIE attracted 526k (3.3%) at 10pm.
