The Great British Bake Off is back with 9.3 milion viewers

The Great British Bake Off returned with a huge audience on Wednesday night (August 5), according to overnight figures.

9.3 million (43%) tuned in to see 12 new bakers attempt to win over Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood with their culinary creations at 8pm. The figure is up almost 2 million on the 7.5m who tuned in to the start of last year's series.

Elsewhere, The Sheriffs Are Coming continued with 3.78m (19.9%) at 7pm, while Earth's Natural Wonders wowed 4.54m (23.3%) at 9pm.

BBC Two's Great British Menu brought in 1.27m (6.4%) at 7.30pm, before Horizon gathered 1.04m (4.8%) at 8pm, and Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Inside the Post Office interested 770k (4.0%) at 9pm.

Over on ITV, Foyle's War managed 1.92m (9.4%) between 8pm and 10pm (147k/0.9% on +1), while the second episode of Cilla aired to 1.0m (9.7%) at 10.40pm (81k/1.5%).

On Channel 4, Kirstie's Fill Your House For Free averaged 770k (3.5%) at 8pm (259k/1.3%), before One Born Every Minute warmed the hearts of 1.34m (6.9%) at 9pm (200k/1.3%).

The Nightmare Neighbour Next Door appealed to 1.55m (7.2%) on Channel 5 at 8pm (106k/0.5%), while Undercover Benefits Cheat was seen by 1.90m (9.7%) at 9pm (158k/1.1%). Wentworth Prison followed with 721k (4.8%) at 10pm (60k/0.7%).

On E4, Jane the Virgin and Nashville brought in 128k (0.7%) at 9pm and 138k (0.9%) at 10pm respectively.
