BBQ Champ served up 2.29 million viewers (12.8%) for ITV on Friday evening (July 31).
Featuring Adam Richman, Mark Blatchford and Myleene Klass, the brand new cooking competition peaked with 2.51 million between 9-10pm.
Gino's Italian Escape: A Taste of the Sun was ITV's highest rated show outside of soaps, attracting 2.39 million (13.6%) at 8pm.
Both shows were outperformed by the returning Ripper Street on BBC One, which entertained 3.73 million (20.8%) at 9pm.
BBC One's evening began with 2.32 million (13.6%) for Animal Super Parents at 7pm, and continued with 2.95 million (15.6%) for Would I Lie to You at 8.30pm.
The night ended with 1.97 million (16.8%) for Room 101 at 10.35pm.
BBC Two's evening was dominated by the rugby league match between Leeds Rhinos and St Helens, which was seen by 1.02 million (5.7%) from 7.30pm.
It was sandwiched between Gardeners' World with 1.34 million (8.1%) and The Perfect Morecambe & Wise with 600k (3.7%).
8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown was once again Channel 4's most popular show, playing to 1.61 million (9%). It was preceded by Location, Location, Location with 850k (4.6%) and followed by The Last Leg with 1.24 million (8.4%).
Channel 5's evening peaked with 656k (3.6%) for Weather Terror: Eye of the Storm, followed by 640k (3.7%) for 20 Moments that Rocked Comedy.
ITV 3's 8pm showing of A Touch of Frost was among the highest-rated multichannel shows, playing to 430k (2.4%) at 8pm.
