Channel 5 and ITN Productions have signed a new three-year deal for highlights from the Sky Bet Championship, League One, League Two, Capital One Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Channel 5 has won the rights from the BBC, and will air highlights from the Football League in a 90-minute programme airing on Saturday nights at 9pm from August.

The highlights programme will feature coverage of every match from the Football League. The show's primetime slot has been made possibly by the expansion of ADI's high-speed fibre-optic network, which will deliver HD footage of each match to an operations centre in Preston ahead of transmission.

The Football League's chief executive Shaun Harvey said: "This is an exceptional opportunity for The Football League to work with a broadcaster that will schedule our matches in a primetime slot.

"It will take our games to a wider, younger audience by giving us the chance to be first in front of fans on a Saturday night."

Meanwhile, Viacom President David Lynn added: "We are extremely happy to be welcoming back top quality football to such a prominent slot on Channel 5.

"The Football League is one of the toughest and most attractive club competitions in world football, and we're convinced this highlights package will prove highly popular with a mainstream audience at the heart of our Saturday evening schedule."

Earlier this year, Sky Sports and BT Sport won the UK television rights for the Premier League from 2016 to 2019 in a record-breaking £5.136 billion deal.
