The ten-part second series will be set in 1935, three years after the events of the current series.

Series creator Paul Ruman said that he was pleased with the response to the show, and was thrilled to be able to reunite the cast.

"Our story moves forward three years, to a Viceroy's last summer, a political gamble to stifle Independence and a great reckoning for Ralph, Alice and Aafrin," he continued.

"I am so grateful to Channel 4 for trusting us to continue our journey through the last years of the British Raj. I feel like the luckiest writer in the world."

The period drama is set in the backdrop of the Himalayas and tea plantations of Northern India. It follows the decline of the British Empire and the beginnings of modern India, told from both sides.

Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Jemima West, Nikesh Patel, Aysha Kala, Olivia Grant and Edward Hogg star alongside Julie Walters in the New Pictures production.

Indian Summers airs on Sundays at 9pm on Channel 4.
