England World Cup defeat watched by 19 million viewers

England's World Cup defeat to Uruguay was the most-watched TV programme for two years.

ITV's coverage of the 2-1 loss was seen by an average audience of 13.2 million viewers, with an audience share of 55.4% from 7pm. It peaked at 19.8m (69.5%) at around 9.30pm.

This is the UK's highest-rated event since the opening and closing ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics. The ratings do not account for those who watch in bars or pubs.

Elsewhere, the ratings were somewhat lower than usual due to the football, with BBC One's Celebrity MasterChef dipping to 2.0m (7.3%) at 8pm. Coverage of Japan v Greece scored 1.8m (23.1%) at 10.35pm.

On BBC Two, Nature's Weirdest Events interested 747,000 (2.8%) at 8pm, followed by Fostering and Me with 737k (2.6%) at 9pm. Mock the Week amused 1.3m (6.4%) at 10pm.

Channel 4's Amazing Spaces appealed to 836k (3.2%) at 8pm (124k/0.4% on +1). Grand Designs brought in 509k (1.8%) at 9pm (194k/1.1%).

Channel 5's Trauma Doctors gathered 657k (2.3%) at 9pm (118k/0.7%), while Big Brother: Power Trip entertained 1.2m (6.4%) at 10pm.

On E4, The Big Bang Theory tickled 740k (2.9%) at 8pm (232k/0.8%), followed by How I Met Your Mother with 383k (1.4%) at 8.30pm (103k/0.4%).
