Monday ratings: 'Young Apprentice' return hires only 4m

The second series of Young Apprentice premiered with fewer than 4m viewers on Monday night, after the show struggled against ITV1's Doc Martin, according to overnight data.

An audience of 3.96m (15.6%) tuned in to BBC One in the 9pm hour to watch Mahamed Awale become the first candidate to be fired by Lord Alan Sugar on Young Apprentice.

The programme was roughly flat on the opening episode of the previous series, but was totally outperformed by drama Doc Martin, which appealed to 8.67m (34.2%) on ITV1 and 299k (1.6%) on +1.

Inside Out had 3.35m (14.3%) on BBC One from 7.30pm, and Panorama mustered 2.65m (10.7%) from 8.30pm. A Question of Sport fetched 2.64m (16.6%) from 10.45pm, while ITV1's Exposure was seen by 1.55m (11.5%).

Brave New World with Stephen Hawking captivated 680k (2.7%) for Channel 4 from 8pm, and Mummifying Alan: Egypt's Last Secret educated 1.43m (6.1%) from 9pm and 346k (2.2%) on Channel 4+1. Rude Tube amused 910k (7.3%) from 10.45pm and 149k (2.4%) on timeshift.

Celebrity Antiques Road Trip enthralled 1.96m (8.5%) on BBC Two in the 7pm hour. University Challenge and Home Cooking Made Easy captivated 3.01m (12.1%) and 2.03m (8.2%) respectively in the 8pm hour. Origin Of Us delighted 1.52m (6%) from 9pm and Never Mind The Buzzcocks amused 1.37m (6.4%) from 10pm.

Celebrity Wish List captivated 153k (0.7%) from 7.30pm, and The Gadget Show switched on 973k (3.9%) in the 8pm slot. The new series of The Hotel Inspector booked in 1.11m (4.4%) from 9pm. Big Brother attracted 1.43m (7.5%) in the 10pm hour, before Big Brother's Bit On The Side entertained 607k (6%) from 11pm.

Overall, ITV1 dominated primetime with 27.9% (+1: 0.6%) against BBC One's 18.6%. BBC Two took third with 7.8%, followed by Channel 4's 4.4% (+1: 0.7%) and Channel 5's 4%.

Elsewhere, the Steven Spielberg-produced blockbuster science fiction series Terra Nova suffered a slight dip on Sky1, entertaining just 713k (2.9%) in the 8pm hour.

Hell's Kitchen USA continued with 389k (1.5%) on ITV2 from 9pm and 144k (0.8%) on +1. Only Connect quizzed 7671k (2.7%) on BBC Four from 8.30pm.
