Lee Mack has shared his plans to end sitcom Not Going Out, which is about to enter its 15th season. The comedy is the longest-running sitcom currently airing on British television, having debuted 20 years ago in 2006.

Speaking to The Mirror, Mack said he would rather see the sitcom "fizzle away slowly" rather than end with a big finale.

Mack said: "We didn’t make a big fanfare about starting. I think we’ll just do the last episode and then [we’ll] talk about whether we want to do anymore, maybe they won’t want any, and maybe we won’t want any.

"For now, we’re definitely doing the next two series so we’ll see how it goes."

Referencing James Corden and Ruth Jones' Gavin & Stacey, which ran for three seasons before returning for Christmas specials in 2019 and 2024, Mack added: "Only having to write an episode once every 10 years, yes that appeals to me, a lot!

"I will be doing a Corden and Jones, having 10 years off you’ve got a long old time to write those jokes. That’s what I’d be doing."

Mack added that he won't be creating a new sitcom once Not Going Out ends, as he'll be happy to "let someone else have a go".

"Oh my god! No one will employ me after this," Mack joked.

"By the time the show finishes, with the current commission, I’ll be, I think, 58, 59. I think it’s time to let someone else have a go. You can’t go on forever, can you."

Not Going Out was renewed for a six episode 15th season last year, which is expected to air in June.

Speaking at the time Mack said: "I am delighted that the BBC are once again showing such great support for studio sitcom.

"It’s a genre I’ve always loved and to be able to be part of it myself for so many years is both a privilege and an excuse not to have to shop, as I always take the underpants they give me home."
