Sherlock triumphs with 8.41 million viewers

Last night's (January 1) Sherlock special was seen by a massive 8.41 million viewers (34.7%), making it the highest-rated show of the evening.

Besting the 8.29 million posted by EastEnders, the 90-minute Victorian special peaked with 8.65 million (34.3%) from 9.15pm.

It was a good night for BBC One, which kicked things off with 5.08 million (20.7%) for Billionaire Boy at 7pm. Dickensian continued with 3.96 million (16.2%) at 8.30pm and Mrs Brown's Boys New Year's Special rounded things off with 5.58 million (31.7%) just after 10.30pm.

Over on BBC Two, The Terminal reeled in an average audience of 1.52 million (6.6%) from 6pm, followed by 2.63 million (10.6%) for University Challenge and 1.26 million (5.1%) for ​The Many Faces of Ronnie Corbett.

ITV's evening was dominated by soaps, but Gino's Italian Escape - Islands in the Sun was seen by 2.35 million viewers (9.5%) at 8pm, while The Big Quiz - Coronation Street v Emmerdale entertained 3.03 million (12.1%).

It was a closely fought contest on Channel 4, with Tangled boasting the highest ratings with 1.69 million (7.3%) from 6pm, followed by 1.43 million (5.8%) for Jamie and Jimmy's Friday Night Feast and 1.49 million (6.5%) for A Good Day to Die Hard at 9pm.

World's Strongest Man Final 2015 was Channel 5's highest-rated show with 1.52 million (6.2%) from 7pm. Christmas with the Double Acts and An Audience with Ken Dodd attracted 747k (3%) and 897k (3.9%), respectively.
