Jonathan Creek will return in a one-off 90-minute special for Easter 2013, it has been announced.

The hit BBC One detective series's new episode will be titled 'The Clue of the Savant's Thumb'.

Alan Davies returns in the title role and Sheridan Smith is also back as fellow investigator and sidekick Joey Ross. It is written by the show's creator David Renwick.

"The new story has more than the usual amount of twists and surprises, and I'm very much looking forward to sleuthing again," said Davies.

"I can't wait to join Sheridan Smith on set again; we're very lucky to have her. It's nearly 17 years since I first auditioned for the part; the duffle coat is always on standby, even if the periods of duffle-hibernation are quite long these days."

Pete Thornton, creative head of BBC in-house comedy, added: "A new Creek script from David is always a joy, and this one is especially brilliant. With the dream team of Alan Davies and Sheridan Smith back on board, we're looking forward to delivering a really special Easter treat for BBC One audiences next year."

Filming starts on the special later this month.

The last episode of Jonathan Creek was 2010 Easter special 'The Judas Tree'. A full series of the show hasn't aired since 2004.

I hope it's more plausible than the "The Judas Tree" was?

It was first confirmed in December that the detective series would return for a one-off episode titled 'The Clue of the Savant's Thumb'.

Alan Davies will be back in the title role, with Sheridan Smith reprising her role as fellow investigator Joey Ross. Rik Mayall will also return to the series as DI Gideon Pryke, a character last seen in 1998 episode 'Black Canary'.

Guest stars in 'Savant's Thumb' include Sarah Alexander (Green Wing), Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous), Nigel Planer (The Young Ones) and Hasina Haque (Casualty).

The 90-minute special will see Creek and Ross drawn into a complex case involving a secret society, strange events at a girls' boarding school, and the miraculous disappearance of a body in front of three witnesses.

Filming is currently underway on the episode, which has been written and directed by the show's creator David Renwick.
